Incognito lingual braces are an alternative to traditional fixed braces, and are popular with patients favouring the reliable, effective and discreet straightening method. They are mostly used for adults, but can be used to correct the teeth of teenage patients too.
Lingual braces are custom made, ensuring a comfortable fit and precise results. We are able to exactly control the placement and position of the brackets on the back of your teeth, making sure your treatment is as effective as possible. The discreet nature of the hidden lingual braces lets you view your results as they happen, increasing your confidence even during treatment.
Lingual braces use gradual and gentle forces to straighten the positions of your teeth, in the same way that traditional fixed braces do.
At your initial consultation, we can inform you if you are a suitable candidate for lingual appliances. We also give you a chance to ask any questions, and let you know your expected treatment time and cost. We take digital scans of your teeth, which are used to create your bespoke brackets and fitting trays.
When your fitting trays are ready, we carefully use them to position the brackets to the back surface of your teeth using strong dental adhesive. We then add the archwire through the brackets, and begin your straightening journey. At regular appointments throughout your journey, we tighten and adjust the wire to ensure the very best results.
When your treatment is complete, we remove the lingual brackets, leaving no damage to the back surface of your teeth. We make sure you are happy with your beautiful new smile and give you a retainer to ensure your teeth remain in their new positions for the long term.
We are pleased to offer ways to help you spread the cost of your lingual brace treatment. Our in-house interest-free payment schemes enable you to break down the cost of treatment into more manageable monthly payments, helping you access orthodontic care. This is not a finance plan but rather staged payments to help ease the cost pressure on you.
Treatment with lingual braces is always more expensive than with conventional braces because of the high laboratory cost in manufacturing the braces and the additional time and expertise needed for their successful management. However, the cost can be spread over the treatment time and for many patients this additional cost is worth the numerous benefits of lingual braces.
As your lingual braces are nearer to your tongue, you may find your speech changes slightly while you get used to the feel of them in your mouth. You may have a slight lisp or pronounce some words differently at first, but this should be temporary and fade the more you get used to your braces.
As with all orthodontic treatment, you may experience some discomfort after your brace is fitted, as you get used to your new appliance. With lingual braces, you may also find the brackets irritate your tongue at first. This is temporary, and should fade after the first couple of weeks. Over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol can be used effectively if necessary.
The length of your lingual brace treatment will vary depending on the complexity of your case and how far your teeth need to move. On average, most cases are completed in around 12-18 months. We can give you a more exact timescale at your initial consultation.
No, lingual braces won’t leave any lasting damage to your teeth. As with all orthodontic treatment, you need to look after your teeth while you are wearing braces, and ensure you are keeping up with an effective cleaning routine to avoid any discolouration. One of the main advantages of lingual braces is that the front surface of your teeth is not affected at all.
