Who can qualify for NHS orthodontic treatment?

Children who qualify for NHS orthodontic treatment are likely to have issues including:

  • Very crowded teeth
  • Teeth that stick out
  • Significant disruption of the bite
  • Missing adult teeth

We use the IOTN (Index of Treatment Need) to assess the need and eligibility of children seeking NHS orthodontic treatment. This is an objective and reliable method to determine those who will benefit most from treatment, and we are extremely well practised in its use. It involves looking at the dental health and aesthetic components of your child’s smile and grading these to ascertain if they qualify for NHS treatment.

If your child does not qualify for NHS orthodontic treatment, we can still offer our services, but this would be on a private basis.

Arranging an NHS orthodontic assessment

We are happy to arrange an NHS orthodontic assessment for all children requiring it. Every child is entitled to a orthodontic consultation through the NHS with a referral from their general dentist. Once we have received the referral, we invite you to contact us to schedule an appointment for your assessment. For non-urgent cases, there is currently a 10-12 month waiting time for an initial assessment and a 2 year waiting time to start treatment.

If we deem your child’s treatment to be urgent, we would fast track your child’s consultation and treatment, as to not compromise their treatment outcome. Your dentist should be able to notify us if they think that there is a need for an urgent assessment.

After your NHS assessment

If you have had an NHS assessment there are a variety of scenarios which can occur following your appointment:

  • You have decided not to have treatment based on the initial assessment and will be discharged back to the care of your dentist.
  • You have not met the criteria dictated by the Government to qualify for NHS treatment and will either be discharged back to the care of your dentist or if you require, we can provide you with a quote for private treatment.
  • You may not be ready to commence treatment and we will arrange to contact you for a subsequent appointment in the future.
  • If you meet the criteria dictated by the Government, which allows you to receive treatment funded by the NHS, you will be placed on our waiting list and we will contact you when we are able to commence treatment.
  • You meet the criteria for NHS funding and we also deem that your treatment should start urgently on health grounds. In this case, we would decide on the necessary time scale to start your treatment, bypassing the waiting list.
