Even minor damage can affect how well your retainer fits and how effectively it holds your teeth in place.
If you have a removable retainer:
If the retainer is cracked, sharp, or no longer fits properly, stop wearing it and contact us as soon as possible. Continuing to wear a damaged retainer may irritate your gums or cause unwanted tooth movement.
If you have a fixed or permanent retainer:
A broken fixed retainer or loose wire should be checked promptly. If the wire is irritating your tongue or gums, orthodontic wax can be used temporarily until you are seen.
Do not attempt DIY repairs.
Trying to glue or bend a retainer at home can make the damage worse and may prevent it from fitting correctly again.
While You’re Waiting for Your Appointment
In some cases, a removable retainer can be repaired. However, if the retainer is badly damaged or no longer fits, a replacement retainer may be required. Replacement retainers are custom-made to ensure your teeth remain stable and protected.
If a retainer is broken and not repaired or replaced quickly, teeth can begin to shift, sometimes in a short space of time. Addressing a broken retainer early helps protect the results of your orthodontic treatment and avoids the need for further correction.
